The Greeley expedition retreated here to Pim Island, Nunavut, Canada in the fall of 1883 expecting relief, but were forced to winter over with no food except lichen, shoe leather and (reportedly) human flesh from the dead. A total of 18 of the 25 in the expedition died, and one of the remaining 7 died shortly after rescue. Sail cloth and other relics remain. | ArcticQ_20080903_173358_149_20.jpg |
